This past presidential election has been interesting and I've found myself more fascinated by American politics rather than the Canadian's.
I'm sure Obama will do good things for North America, and that his inauguration is indeed a historical event which shows how far society has come. However, it's hard to stop and think about the magnitude of his popularity. Entire nations look to this one guy to bring about change...the word itself was used over and over again in his campaign yet it is so hard to pin point what this change means or signfies.
Like other areas in our lives, the ability to act as citizens dimishes as we are more and more addressed as consumers. I for one, am guilty of acting far more like a consumer than a citizen - I'll be the first to admit! Obama has become a brand that we identify with and have come to worship, even for those who are not allowed to vote in the American election. This whole election was about voting for a name or ideal. We are more concerned with the image that his name is associated with, and we have treated his election as if we were buying another product. His name has becomed celebritized, and people are more concerned with what he and his wife are wearing much less about his ability has a leader. Don't get me wrong - because of this election and Obama, people have participated in the political process. Despite how they came to make their decision, they at least exercised their right to vote, no matter how informed their decision was.
He has become the savior in a time of economic instability and turbulent times. His election is the answer to the war on terrorism, and global warming. His position as the leader of the free world will solve all problems and because he is now the president, change will and has happened. Doesn't all of that seem a bit much, if not more of a self fullfilling prophecy rather than the act of a good leader?
Now, like I said, I'm sure Obama will do good things these next four years...but at the same time, isn't it a little dangerous to put all your hope into one man? In doing so, aren't we building him up as an idol to be worshipped?
